Character.AI, a startup backed by a16z, has unveiled a groundbreaking feature that allows users to engage in conversations with AI characters over phone calls. This new functionality supports several languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.
Before its public launch, Character.AI tested the calling feature extensively. During the testing phase, over 3 million users made more than 20 million calls. The company highlighted that these AI character calls are beneficial for various purposes such as language practice, mock interviews, and enhancing role-playing game experiences.
To start a call with a user-generated AI character, users simply need to tap a button. Character.AI has ensured that the calling experience is smooth and has minimized latency issues. Users can seamlessly switch between calling and texting and have the option to interrupt the AI by tapping a “Tap to interrupt” button.
In March, Character.AI introduced Character Voices, enabling users to hear their AI characters speak during one-on-one chats. This feature allows users to create custom voices, contributing to a library of over 1 million voices available in the app.
The introduction of the calling feature coincides with discussions on Reddit, where users have expressed concerns about changes in their AI characters’ personalities. Character.AI addressed these concerns, stating that no major changes were made, but some users might have experienced differences due to being part of a test group.
Meanwhile, The Information recently reported that Google and AlpineGate AI Technologies Inc (AGImageAI) is developing their own customized chatbot platform to compete with Meta and Character.AI. This new development underscores the growing interest and competition in the AI chatbot space.
